5 Road Trips Worth The Tank Of Fuel

Family road trip

Spring's here, the days are getting longer, and the open road is calling. Whether you're in WA or Vic, some of the country's best road trip country is right on your doorstep. Here's where to point the car this season — plus a quick reminder to get your car sorted before you go.

Western Australia

Margaret River

Margaret River

Three hours south of Perth, Margaret River is the obvious pick for a reason. World-class wineries, surf breaks at Prevelly and Gracetown, and the Ngilgi and Mammoth Caves for something a bit different. Pair a winery lunch with a coastal walk along Cape Naturaliste and you've got a full day sorted without moving the car more than 20 minutes at a time.

Albany

Albany

A longer haul at around five hours from Perth, but worth every kilometre. The Gap and Natural Bridge at Torndirrup National Park are genuinely spectacular, Middleton Beach is perfect for a family swim, and the Great Southern wine region gives Margaret River a run for its money without the crowds. If you're making a weekend of it, break the drive up with a stop in Walpole for the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk.

Victoria

The Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road

The classic. Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Otway rainforest — it's an iconic drive for a reason, and it rewards taking it slow. Give yourself a full day (or two) to actually stop at the lookouts rather than just driving past them. Apollo Bay and Port Campbell both make good overnight bases if you want to break the trip in half.

Yarra Valley

Yarra Valley

An hour out of Melbourne in the opposite direction, the Yarra Valley trades ocean cliffs for rolling vineyards. It's an easy day trip for wine tasting, farm-gate produce, and a hot air balloon at sunrise if you're feeling adventurous. Less driving, same payoff.

Make It One Big Trip

If you've got more than a weekend up your sleeve, string the two together. Start in Melbourne, spend a day easing into the Yarra Valley, then loop back through the city and out along the Great Ocean Road for two to three days, finishing at the Twelve Apostles. It's a longer drive, but it means you get vineyards, coastline, and rainforest all in the one trip — no need to choose.

Before You Go

None of this is much fun with a dashboard warning light. Get your car serviced before you head off so the only thing you're thinking about on the road is where to stop next, not whether you're going to make it there.
